Malocclusion

Malocclusion

Malocclusion refers to the misalignment or incorrect positioning of the teeth and jaws when the mouth is closed. It affects both appearance and oral function, potentially leading to difficulties in chewing, speaking, and maintaining oral hygiene. Malocclusion can range from mild spacing or crowding to severe jaw misalignment that requires orthodontic or surgical intervention.

Types of Malocclusion

1. Class I Malocclusion

  • The bite is normal, but individual teeth may be crowded, rotated, or misaligned.

  • Most common type.

2. Class II Malocclusion (Retrognathism/Overbite)

  • Upper teeth and jaw significantly overlap the lower teeth.

  • Often called an "overbite" or "buck teeth."

3. Class III Malocclusion (Prognathism/Underbite)

  • Lower jaw protrudes forward beyond the upper jaw.

  • Gives the appearance of a prominent chin.
